For the last few years, Figma has held an annual conference called Config, that is a celebration of the art that is design. This global event started as a gathering of design systems nerds who wanted to talk about how to make the process of design easier, more collaborative and more powerful. This was at an exciting time for Figma – they were growing their user base, introducing new features and continually learning and testing the design collaboration model.
Each Config conference has a seed of a theme that the identity is built from. The theme for 2021 was "spectrum." We collaborated with Figma to design a visually vivid brand, introducing motifs like refraction layers and a rich color story. We found new opportunities to expand on the shape system employed in the Figma brand and used this evolved shape motif as a frame for presenters. Event branding is an exciting channel to push the boundaries of the core brand and be a bit unexpected. The event brand needed to be flexible but robust to support clear communication around the event details, purpose of each talk, hierarchy between keynotes and other presentations.
