Fuzzco on Unhappy Hipsters!

Sadly, not the first time she’d had to hold him back from a fistfight with a bocce ball.  (UH Foto Friday; photo by Squire Fox, featuring Fuzzco)

Thanks to everyone who attended Helen’s art show last night at Hope and Union. Thanks especially to Jeffery Rhodes of Margo Kaufman Gallery, Harper and John of Hope and Union and Jessica and Billy, makers of strong coffee drinks and havers of smiles for putting together such a nice night. Helen’s show nearly sold out with only 3 pieces of ten remaining. If you didn’t make it last night feel free to stop by Hope and Union as the show will be up for two weeks. A portion of proceeds benefits the Spoleto Festival USA.

Thanks to the City Paper for covering the show. One more huge thanks to David Rice (Helen’s pa) for building all of the awesome frames (check out the triangle ones!!).

Read her whole interview:

1.From where do you draw the inspiration for your art?
I tend to get obsessed with things- there’s a lot of repetition in my work- i find a lot of inspiration online, i work a lot and i’m on the computer all the time. i’ve started collecting images of stuff stuck to walls. Stuff like paper and ribbon and cat hair and drawings and torn things. That’s been my inspiration for a while.

2.People recognize you as a successful designer but don’t know you well as an artist. What’s it like for you having a bit of a hidden side with your artwork?
That’s nice, um, I guess I don’t like talking too much about my art. I tend to start making things up on the spot and it can be dangerous- but I’ve always made art. It inspires my design aesthetic and it’s a relief to do something that I have complete control over. It’s also a great way to spend time.

3.What style would you say your art is? Why do you choose to use that style?
There is definitely an attempt to make art that is vague. I try to stop before it’s too late. I prefer squares to circles most of the time. I like things to look empty sometimes. I like messy things. I have no idea what style that all adds up to.

4.What are your feelings going into the show?
I’m really nervous- what if no one shows up- i will have to drink all of the champagne.

5.What do you think people should be most excited about seeing?
I drew a mouse on one of my pieces. It will be hard to find. That should be exciting.

Helen <3 Redux

Helen is proud to announce that she’s been inducted to the Redux board where she’ll get to contribute to the thinking and decision making that goes on at this great organization. If you haven’t been to Redux in a while, you might have missed some recent developments.  The classroom and print shop have been renovated to better accommodate outreach programs, film screenings, lecture series and music events.  Take a look at the current class offerings here.  More on this as it develops!
