In Which Everyone is Happy as if They Spent All Day at a Water Park

3

Thanks to everyone who attended Helen’s art show last night at Hope and Union. Thanks especially to Jeffery Rhodes of Margo Kaufman Gallery, Harper and John of Hope and Union and Jessica and Billy, makers of strong coffee drinks and havers of smiles for putting together such a nice night. Helen’s show nearly sold out with only 3 pieces of ten remaining. If you didn’t make it last night feel free to stop by Hope and Union as the show will be up for two weeks. A portion of proceeds benefits the Spoleto Festival USA.

Thanks to the City Paper for covering the show. One more huge thanks to David Rice (Helen’s pa) for building all of the awesome frames (check out the triangle ones!!).

Read her whole interview:

1.From where do you draw the inspiration for your art?
I tend to get obsessed with things- there’s a lot of repetition in my work- i find a lot of inspiration online, i work a lot and i’m on the computer all the time. i’ve started collecting images of stuff stuck to walls. Stuff like paper and ribbon and cat hair and drawings and torn things. That’s been my inspiration for a while.

2.People recognize you as a successful designer but don’t know you well as an artist. What’s it like for you having a bit of a hidden side with your artwork?
That’s nice, um, I guess I don’t like talking too much about my art. I tend to start making things up on the spot and it can be dangerous- but I’ve always made art. It inspires my design aesthetic and it’s a relief to do something that I have complete control over. It’s also a great way to spend time.

3.What style would you say your art is? Why do you choose to use that style?
There is definitely an attempt to make art that is vague. I try to stop before it’s too late. I prefer squares to circles most of the time. I like things to look empty sometimes. I like messy things. I have no idea what style that all adds up to.

4.What are your feelings going into the show?
I’m really nervous- what if no one shows up- i will have to drink all of the champagne.

5.What do you think people should be most excited about seeing?
I drew a mouse on one of my pieces. It will be hard to find. That should be exciting.

Happy Valentine’s Day (the video)

“I love a good bubble bath. Effervescent.

I love creative postulation, and paydays. I love paydays.

I love a white, polished yacht. Like the tips of my nails.

I love a good curling match, and mahogany too.

I love combing horses and feeding them bales of alfalfa.

I love you. I love you.”

For Valentine’s Day we present you with this video of love and longing. We used stock photos from the 80s, created a stop animation with our plethora of toys, and tied it together with a wound-up custom audio experiment.

We hope you love it as much as we love you.

addy-blog

The Addy awards took place this past weekend, and n-n-n-n-n-not to sound like a broken record but….

F-f-fuzzco is the cats lingerie.

Among such a high caliber of competing work, we were floored to find 5 Gold awards and a Best in Interactive with our name on it.

We were really surprised that we were able to take home Best in Interactive on a project that we did in a weekend on no budget when we were up against some really great projects.

Clients that were recognized include: Spoleto Festival, Michael James Moran Fine Woodworked Furniture, Sweeteeth, Sharp Electronics (℅ Crenshaw Communications), and Magar Hatworks.

The event was rad. Hat’s off to the Charleston Advertising Federation for pulling off a great party.

*note to reader, credits for the Sweeteeth packaging should go to Nelson Printing. The printing credit was incorrect.

We did not start the fire. It was always burn’n since the world been turn’n

A few months back, this place some houses up Kracke street, took a scolding hot flame bath. It was the work of Mr Arson for sure. Josh and Helen saw it, and FELT IT, from the comfort of the Fuzzco piazza. The next morning, a frenzy of flies could be seen feasting on the nutrient rich/water soaked sooty soot. Months passed and nothing happened until just recently, a demo crew was paid an exorbitant amount of dollar bills to make the house disappear. This consisted of two men, one in control of a giant mechanical spork made by Volvo and the other standing with hazard cones. I am pretty sure this fellow was in control of the other fellow. We watched the smooth operators work from the comfort of our office moccasins. A memorable part for me, came when the spork tore into an upstairs bedroom and out popped a torrential downpour of teddy bears. Take a close look at the 4th picture down. You can just make out a Winnie, the Pooh, The bear. Before long the house was reduced to a pile of rubble and teddy bears. For the next few days, on top of everything, the triumphant Volvo danced a victory dance. Now, it is nothing but an empty lot with a large dirty utensil.

Helen <3 Redux

redux

Helen is proud to announce that she’s been inducted to the Redux board where she’ll get to contribute to the thinking and decision making that goes on at this great organization. If you haven’t been to Redux in a while, you might have missed some recent developments.  The classroom and print shop have been renovated to better accommodate outreach programs, film screenings, lecture series and music events.  Take a look at the current class offerings here.  More on this as it develops!
